Wolves  Men’s 4X800 Meter and Women’s Sprint Medley Relay Teams are State Champions!

On a broiling hot (102 Degrees) afternoon, on May 16th, 2009, at the Arizona 1A/3A State Track and Field Meet, the Saint Augustine Catholic High School Wolves  4X800M Relay team made Arizona High School history .  The Men’s 4X800M Relay was the first event of the afternoon.  Matt Buhl ran the opening leg and battled a strong San Pasqual  runner until he handed off to Tom Walsh.  Tom ran a personal best time for his leg, but the team trailed Joseph City by thirty yards at the next handoff.  Joe Haro got the baton and steadily gained ground , but even though the Wolves were well ahead of state record pace, they still trailed Joseph City at the final handoff.  Nico Montanez took the stick and revealed his heart, willpower, and determination.  Nico ran the fastest 800M of his life and outraced the Joseph City anchorman to the finish line.   In the process, the Wolves set a new meet and Arizona State 1A record.   They shattered the previous record by eleven seconds.  Second place finisher, Joseph City, beat the old record by ten seconds.   Joe, Tom, Matt, and Nico are the first male athletes from Saint Augustine to become state champions.

The Wolves won the day’s first event and the Lady Wolves finished the meet in style.  The Lady Wolves Sprint Medley Relay team stepped on the track for the final event of the two-day meet.  As freshmen, Kristen Ayers, Zarina Townsend, and Sabrina Dohman teamed up with Sandy Crusa to win the sprint medley relay and become Saint Augustine’s first state champions.   Three years later, they returned to the state finals with Loreana Aragon for their final race as St Augustine athletes.   Kristen got the team off to a solid start with her 100M leg and perfect handoff to Loreana .  Normally a distance runner, Loreana accelerated with sprinter’s speed in her 100M leg and put the team in second place.  Zarina took the baton and raced the fastest 200M of SACHS’ short history.  She blew past the Tempe Prep runner and passed the baton to Sabrina with a lead.  Once Sabrina had the baton and the lead, there was no doubt about the future outcome.  Sabrina posted the fastest 400M relay split in SACHS history, resulting in a sub-two minute time, a new school record, and bookend state championships for the three seniors.

The state championship relay wins capped a great meet for SACHS athletes.  R.J. Davis medaled in both the 100M and 200M Dashes.  Jose Bustillos medaled in the 400M Dash.  Joe Haro medaled in the 800M Run.  Matt Buhl and Joe finished with silver and bronze medals in the 1600M Run.  The Wolves had four medalists in the 3200M run, Nico Montanez, Matt, Joe, and Tom Walsh.  Emilio Martinez-White medaled in the 300M Hurdles.  The Wolves’ 4X100M relay team of Jose, Matt, Emilio, and R.J. medaled in new school record time.  R.J. also anchored the bronze medal 4X400M relay team with Jose, David Aragon, and Emilio to another school record.   In the team standings, the Wolves posted their highest point total ever and jumped from a sixth place finish last year up to an impressive 3rd place finish in 2009, SACHS’ fourth year of competition in Track and Field.

For the Lady Wolves, Julie Crusa won the silver medal in the Discus Throw and bronze (with a new school record) in the Shot Put.  Serena Campas made the finals of the Long Jump and medaled in the Triple Jump.   The 4x100M team of Julie Crusa, Kristen Ayers, Zarina Townsend, and Sabrina Dohman brought home fourth place medals.  Zarina medaled in both the 100M and 200M dashes, and Sabrina  set a new school record in the 200M dash and placed fourth in the 400M.  Loreana Aragon was our distance star with silver medals in both the 800M and 1600M Runs and a bronze in the 3200M Run.  In the team standings, the Lady Wolves posted their highest point total and moved from a fourth place finish last year up to an outstanding  3rd place finish in 2009.

Sabrina Dohman completed her SACHS athletic career with an incredible accomplishment.  During her four-year career, Sabrina earned 16 medals, the maximum possible, at the state track meets.   Sabrina medaled twice in the 100M dash, twice in the 200M dash, three times in the 400M dash and twice in the 800M run.  She also anchored seven award-winning relay teams, including two gold medal winners.  The great competition and environment at the state track meet inspired all our athletes and they responded by setting nine new school records.  During 2009 season, the Wolves posted 25 new records.  It was difficult to keep up with all the record-breaking performances.   We’ll miss our graduating seniors, Kristen Ayers, Matt Buhl, Julie Crusa, R.J. Davis, Sabrina Dohman, Joe Haro, Becca Marquez, Ryan Odeski, Zarina Townsend, and Valerie Walsh.  As a team, we made great strides in the past three years.  We’ll miss our seniors’ leadership and dedication.   We wish our graduating teammates the best.  They set the standard as “Leaders in Excellence.”  God Bless.

Run with the Pack,  Go Wolves!
